Kriterium is led by a steering committee consisting of university representatives (one academic representative or one representative from the library or publishing centre at each university). An academic representative from the Swedish Research Council, as well as one from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and a library representative from the Swedish National Library provide independent monitoring. The steering group also represents the consortium in its dealings with the participating external partners and institutions of higher education. Essentially, this group has three tasks in various constellations. The group as a whole makes decisions about the consortium, guidelines for the work and makes proposals to the universities about how the work should proceed. The academic co-ordinators act as a review group with regular meetings, making decisions about publication of manuscripts reviewed in Kriterium.
Representatives of the libraries/publishing houses are responsible for questions concerning the publication, including the necessary co-ordination among the various universities and their publishing processes. These representatives are not linked to the academic assessment. The representatives of the host university convene other parties to meetings, act as co-ordinators and are responsible for managing the agenda and documents for meetings, archiving and documentation. Academic co-ordinators are expected to possess a high general level of academic expertise (at least as associate professors) and to have extensive experience of expert reviews, preferably within different fields. It is also preferred that the representatives of different universities have their base within different disciplines. The representative of the host university is chair and calls to meetings.
The library or publishing representatives are expected to have good knowledge of publication work at their own university.
The steering committee consists of the following representatives from the universities, from the National Library (KB), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) and from the National Research Council (VR). In addition, the group includes two adjunct publishing house representatives from Makadam and Nordic Academic Press. These are permitted to contribute and take part in discussions, but are not required to take responsibility for the work of the organization in the same way as members of the steering committee.
